Playing with AS3 Low Level Graphics

I've been toying around with the low level graphics API after seeing Ralph Hauwerts awesome presentation at the FITC. (I'm still waiting for my tshirt though). He demoed an application using particles doing all those fancy things and I wanted to try that myself. I'm still working on it and it's not as cool as Ralph's demo, but my first experiments turned out to look kinda cool too. Enjoy.

In the first SWF I just tried to get the basic code working, randomly moving particles, multiple colors and a nice blur effect. Looks cool, but turns black as the blur effect sums up (reload if its black already):

My next attempt is better. I used a ColorTransform to slowly increase the color values which gives this nice animation:

Amazing what can be done in an hour of playing around with Flash's drawing API and bitmap manipulation.

Tag zwei in Paris. Nachdem wir den halben Tag wegen meines Jetlags verpasst haben, sind wir erstmal zum Essen raus. Danach ging es zu weiteren Sehenswürdigkeiten und einer Bootstour. Brüllend heiß und Paris ist ziemlich... nun ja, es riecht überall. Bin wohl von der guten Luft in Toronto verwöhnt. Morgen fahren wir nach Versailles. Juhuu.

Flex Builder and Locales relative to the Workspace

For the project I'm working on right now we are using Flex' localization mechanism. To do so, you need to specify the location of the .properties file in the .actionScriptProperties file, either by editing the file directly or using the project properties dialog. Problem is that this path needs to be absolute. Putting in /Users/jakob/work/.../project-dir/src/main/flex/locales/{locale} is a bad idea. Fortunately Flex Builder is built on eclipse so you can use Eclipse's Linked Resources. Per default a variable called DOCUMENTS is defined and points to the current workspace:

So with that in mind you can easily reference paths relative to your workspace:

${DOCUMENTS}/project-dir/src/main/flex/locales/{locale}

Urlaub – Vacation

Freunde, es ist so weit. Ich mache Urlaub. Ich habe seit langem endlich wieder Zeit um mal richtig Urlaub zu machen. Morgen früh geht es nach St. Lucia, einer kleinen aber feinen tropischen Insel. Während der nächsten Woche werde ich daher nicht online sein. Klingt unglaublich, ist aber wohl wahr. Ich lasse sämtliche elektronischen Geräte - abgesehen von meiner neuen Kamera - zurück und werde meine Zeit weder mit Programmieren, Blogs noch mit dem Lesen von RSS Feeds verbringen. Stattdessen werde ich für mich völlig untypische Dinge tun: unter anderem mal nichts, schnorcheln, Touren durch den tropischen Regenwald und (hoffentlich) atemberaubende Bilder schießen. Wenn ich zurück bin, werde ich natürlich berichten...

For all my english speaking friends: I'll be off to St. Lucia the coming week. I'll be offline. Yeah. You read this right. Unbelievable and mind boggling but true. I'll leave all my electronic gadgets - except my new camera - at home and try to do some for me very unusual things like doing nothing, snorkling tours through the rainforset and making (hopefullly) awesome photos. When I'm back, I'll let you know, so stay tuned...

End of an Era

Manne's last night in Toronto...

My roommate left yesterday. I can't believe that the four months are already over. I remember the first time we met:

"Ah, you're the Swedish guy!" - "Oh, you're the German guy?"

From then on everything just worked fine. You know all those stories of friends moving into a shared apartment just to become worst enemies. So I was somewhat worried to live in an apartment with somebody that I don't know at all. But as it turned out, everything was fine.

So right now I'm sitting here and the apartment feels kind of... empty. Even though I always complained about Manne's taste of music and he obviously didn't like my music very much either, it was a great time.

Manne, you were not only a pleasant and great room mate, you also became a good friend. Thank you for the great time, thank you for being such a good friend. Miss you, man!

See you in Stockholm or in Munich!
